Terve Research enables research teams to launch studies faster, reach participants more easily, and collect health data automatically via wearables
BERLIN, 31 AUGUST 2026. Huawei Consumer Business Group and Berlin-based health technology company Thryve are jointly launching Terve Research. The new platform addresses two of the most persistent practical challenges in medical research: finding suitable participants for research projects and collecting reliable health data over extended periods of time. Terve Research connects Huawei's health and wellness wearables, including medically certified devices, with Thryve's digital study infrastructure, allowing researchers to set up studies, onboard participants, and have relevant biometric data collected and processed automatically. Huawei wearables are used by millions of people across Europe.
Terve Research, named after the Finnish word for health, pronounced "tehr-avy", is an app and digital research platform for medical studies, built on Thryve's white-label research platform. Rather than requiring measurements to be taken manually on-site or self-reported by participants, data from Huawei wearables can flow continuously and automatically into each study. This is designed to reduce the workload on research teams while improving the quality and completeness of the data collected. Terve Research is independently managed and operated by Thryve, who also collaborates with researchers to set up and run studies in full compliance with European data protection laws. The role of Huawei is limited to the contribution of funding, with no involvement in the actual operations.
For standard closed studies, the research team defines the question, target group, and required data, and selects the appropriate Huawei wearable. Researchers onboard participants directly via the Terve Research app, after which the relevant measurements are automatically collected, processed according to the study protocol, and made available for analysis.
Research teams can also open studies to users of compatible Huawei wearables across Europe. Interested individuals can browse available studies in the Terve Research app and register voluntarily. After providing their consent, the data required for the relevant study is automatically collected and made available to the research team. This has the potential to significantly simplify what is often the most time-consuming part of running a study: recruitment. Rather than relying solely on individual research centres or local participant groups, projects can reach a much broader potential participant audience across many European countries.
Andreas Zimmer, Head of Product for Europe at Huawei Consumer Business Group, said: "Wearables have the potential to bring medical research much closer to people's everyday lives. In China, we have already seen what becomes possible when large participant numbers and continuously collected health data come together. Studies on topics such as blood pressure and blood glucose have produced concrete insights there. With Terve Research, we want to make that potential available to researchers in Europe."
Friedrich Lämmel, CEO of Thryve, added: "Access to study participants is a key challenge for everyone in research, and we believe this collaboration has great potential to massively accelerate participant sign-ups and, with them, medical research itself. We are also proud that Huawei trusts Thryve's research platform with this app, the latest addition to a white-label platform that already powers studies run in collaboration with organisations such as Charité, the Robert Koch Institute, and Stanford. A good research question alone is not enough: studies need participants and reliable data, and our role is to make that data secure, structured, and usable for research."
Huawei has offered a comparable solution to medical researchers in China for several years. The Huawei Health Research app has been used in hundreds of studies by independent medical and academic institutions, with more than ten million people participating in total. Studies have covered topics including blood pressure, blood glucose, and sleep. These foundations underpin the launch of Terve Research in Europe. Thryve brings its own experience connecting data from more than 500 wearables and health data sources, with several research projects and customers in more than 30 countries globally.
The Terve Research app will be available shortly at terveresearch.com and from all major app stores. Huawei and Thryve are currently working with many leading European research institutions to launch the first studies.
Huawei's products and services are available in more than 170 countries. The company operates 14 research and development centres worldwide, including in Germany, Sweden, India, and China.
